While the COVID-19 pandemic has halted most football around the world, some countries are planning a return. The current scheduling will see numerous divisions back playing over the coming weeks and months.
Proposals are already in place for the Bundesliga, Premier League, Serie A, and A-League teams to resume their seasons. With each country in a different position, this page will keep you updated on the latest news on when football will be back across the globe.
Premier League Potential Return Date – 8th June 2020
Proposals dubbed “Project Return” in England have projected that Premier League football could return on June 8th 2020. Some teams such as Arsenal and Sheffield United are already back training at their respective complexes, albeit on an individual basis. The schedule sees May 18th as the date when clubs could return to training in groups, before getting matches underway a few weeks later.
German Bundesliga Return Date Confirmed – 16th of May 2020
Germany is the first major European football league to return. Teams have been back in training for some time already. Plans were originally in place for the Bundesliga to resume from 9th May, but the government have requested another week to assess the situation. Lockdown measures have begun to be relaxed in the country with the impact of that still filtering through. The latest update sees the 16th of May 2020 confirmed as the date for matches to return, following the successful government approval.
Italian Serie A Potential Return Date – 13th June 2020
There has been a timeline established for Italy’s Serie A clubs to return to action. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has stated that training can resume from May 4th in line with social distancing being relaxed. Team sessions could come into play two weeks later on May 18th. From there, clubs would likely need a period of time to prepare for the return of competitive matches from June 2nd 2020 onwards. This has since been pushed to at least the 13th of June, however. Approval will still be required from the Government so this is not yet a confirmed date.
La Liga A June Restart on the Cards – June 2020
Football in Spain is looking likely to return in June 2020. Organisers have suggested that players from the top two tiers of football will begin to train as soon as is allowed by the health authorities. La Liga has been suspended, along with most European leagues, since mid-March. It was unclear if they would be able to proceed with their season but with other leagues such as the Bundesliga getting ready for kick-off, Spain is following suit.
There is no information on how and when the league will resume exactly but watch this space.
Australian A-League Potential Return Date – 1st August 2020
There are still five rounds of the A-League season to be completed in the current campaign. Proposals have been put into place that would see teams return to training on July 1st, with matches beginning again a month later on 1st August 2020. The latest reports suggest that the FFA could adopt a hub model. This would see all matches played at one venue, to reduce the logistical workload on clubs, their staff and players.
