Rangers vs Celtic Scottish Premiership Preview: Betting Tips, Team News & Predictions – 15/03/2020

*Please note this match has been postponed along with the rest of the Scottish Premiership due to the Coronavirus outbreak.*

Steven Gerrard’s Rangers host league leaders Celtic in the third Old Firm league clash of the season on Sunday. The Ibrox outfit got the better of their bitter rivals at the end of December but have since been in free-fall. Rangers have to contend with a tricky Europa League tie against Bayern Leverkusen and the Blues will be hoping for no fresh injuries.

On the other hand, Celtic have dropped points only once since the turn of the year, opening up a 13-point gap at the top of the table. They put five past St Mirren on Saturday and have an entire week to prepare for this monster clash.

As always, this is a high-stakes game that will surely be explosive. Check our predicted line-ups and best bet below.

Rangers vs Celtic – The Form Guide

Rangers beat Celtic 2-1 at Celtic Park for the first time since 2009 in December and earned themselves an advantage in the title race. However, they failed to build on that momentum. The Gers have dropped points in five of their 10 league games since then and have scored only 11 goals in that time.

To add insult to injury, Rangers were dumped out of the Scottish Cup by the bottom of the table Hearts and look set to have another trophy-less campaign. They are 13 behind Celtic in the league, albeit with a game in hand, and a loss here on Sunday is unthinkable. The Gers will need to play better than they have all year to avoid defeat.

Celtic have put their disappointing defeat to FC Copenhagen in the Europa League behind them and continue their assault on domestic trophies. The Bhoys are all but guaranteed to bag a record-equalling famous 9 titles in a row and could land an unprecedented quadruple treble.

The Hoops have welcomed back several players in recent weeks and goals are coming thick and fast. They have scored 89 goals in 30 league goals while conceding only 19. Celtic will be looking for revenge over their arch-rivals, so expect fireworks.

What is the Team News?

Canadian International Scott Arfield limped off at Tynecastle in his sides cup loss to Hearts and is set for a period on the side-lines. He has been instrumental for the Gers this season and will be a huge loss in the middle.

Ryan Jack picked up an injury in the same game but should be back in the fold here. He was expected to feature against Ross County but wasn’t deemed fit enough.

Alfredo Morelos will likely lead the line for the home team. He has yet to score against the Hoops and hasn’t scored in the league since Boxing Day. The fiery Columbian will be hoping to end both droughts and will be in the thick of all the Rangers attacks.

Jermaine Defoe is also back to fitness giving Gerrard options.

Captain James Tavernier should be back for this clash in defence.

Mikey Johnston is Celtic’s only long-term absentee. He is out for the season following a knee injury.

Oliver Ntcham will undergo a late fitness test with the French U21 star suffering from a calf injury.

Fellow Frenchman Odsonne Edouard will be the target man for the Hoops as he eyes his ninth goal in the fixture and 27th of the season.

Predicted Line-Ups

Rangers Predicted Line-up: McGregor, Tavernier, Goldson, Edmundson, Barisic, Kamara, Davis, Aribo, Hagi, Kent, Morelos

Celtic Predicted Line-up: Forster, Frimpong, Julien, Ajer, Taylor, Forrest, Brown, McGregor, Christie, Edouard, Griffiths

Rangers vs Celtic Latest Odds

Rangers have dropped 13 points in their last nine league games, handing the league to Celtic. They were beaten at home by Celtic at the start of the season and beat them away from home.

The bookies are finding this one hard to judge however as the Gers do tend to lift their performances when they are the underdogs. STS have them priced at 17/10 (2.75) and Celtic at 11/8 (2.4). The latter looks more attractive from a betting point of view with plenty of signs pointing in the visitor’s favour.

There has only been one draw in their last 14 meetings, but if you think the points will be shared, you’ll get 23/10 (3.3) with STS.

Rangers vs Celtic Score Prediction

Despite their recent drop in form, Rangers have averaged 2.36 goals in their 14 home matches this season. Meanwhile, Celtic have failed to score only once on the road this campaign. Which all suggests goals is the way to go.

Edouard loves scoring in a derby and is hotly fancied to score again here, and Morelos will be expected to break his duck.

Both sides have let in only 19 league goals, so they are balanced defensively. Rangers need to win this match more for some pride so you get the feeling that they could find themselves exposed at the back. Celtic have proved they are lethal on the counter and we reckon they will score a few.

Correct score pick: 3-1 to Celtic at 18/1 (19.0) with STS.

Rangers vs Celtic Tip

Steven Gerrard’s side look dejected and are not reaching the heights they did in the early part of the season. Even Gerrard himself has bemoaned the lack of creativity in his side’s midfield. On and off-field it’s not been a great 2020 for the Gers. Depending on how Thursday night’s match against Bayern Leverkusen goes may determine how important this match will be for Gerrard’s future at the club.

Celtic have scored 40 of their league goals in the first half this season and with Rangers likely pressing high up the field will have chances to get in behind. We know how clinical the Bhoys have been lately, and we expect them to punish Rangers early.

With this in mind, we’re tipping Celtic to win both the first and second half.

Best bet: half-time/full-time Celtic/Celtic at 13/5 (3.7) with STS
