Southampton vs Aston Villa Premier League Preview: Betting Tips, Team News & Predictions – 22/02/2020

Southampton host Aston Villa on Saturday looking to avoid a home defeat for the first time in three league games. The Saints are however in a far more comfortable position than this weekend’s rivals sitting 12th in the table and seven points above the drop.

The Villans will have to pick themselves up for this one after suffering a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Spurs last time out. They are only one point ahead of West and Watford and a loss here could see them slip into the relegation zone.

Southampton vs Aston Villa – The Form Guide

Southampton have dug themselves out of a hole and now look set for Premier League survival. Englishman Danny Ings has been the catalyst for much of the Saint’s change in fortunes with the veteran striker bagging 18 goals this season already. He knocked in another goal last weekend against Burnley, but the Saints went on to lose that match 2-1.

In fact, the Saints have lost three of their last five league games, including two at home. These defeats however were to runaway leaders Liverpool and European hunting Wolves. In both those games Southampton put in good performances and they will be hungry to make amends this weekend.

Aston Villa have won only once in their last five, losing three. Of those losses, the 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth and this weekend's loss to Spurs will hurt the most. Dean Smith’s side had plenty of opportunities to nick wins in both but squandered them. This is especially true in the Spurs game in which Villa had a whopping 18 attempts.

The Birmingham club now boasts the worst defensive record in the league, conceding 50 times. Villa have a tricky run of games to contend with, and a win here would go along way in saving their season. They play away to Leicester before hosting Chelsea in their next two games.

What is the Team News?

Nathan Redmond has been one of the stand-outs for Southampton this season. He has unfortunately been ruled out for up to 2 months with a hip injury, which is a real blow for boss Ralph Hassenhutl.

Attacking midfielder Sofiane Boufal is will also miss out through injury. The Moroccan international is hopeful of a quick return.

Wesley is out for the season leaving Villa light in attacking options. John McGinn is pushing for a return from injury and should be available for selection again in a couple of weeks.

Keinan Davis is ruled out with a thigh injury and Tyrone Mings remains a doubt. The English defender is suffering from an illness and should be ready to play on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Tom Heaton and Jed Steer are long term absentees with Pepe Reina stepping in, in their absence.

Predicted Line-Ups

Southampton Predicted Line-up: McCarthy, Walker-Peters, Stephens, Vestergaard, Bertrand, Ward-Prowse, Hobjerg, Armstrong, Djenepo, Ings, Long

Aston Villa Predicted Line-up: Reina, Konsa, Engles, Mings, Guilbert, Drinkwater Douglas Luiz, Targett, El Ghazi, Samatta, Grealish

Southampton vs Aston Villa Latest Odds

Southampton have picked up nine wins so far this season which is almost double (5) what they had at the same stage last season. They are playing some attractive football and lost to Burnley via a flukey goal and a wonder goal. On a different day had luck been on their side, they could have been in an even better position.

Villa have been plugging away this season but haven’t got enough points for their efforts. They were unlucky not to get anything against Spurs, but they have to be more clinical if they are to survive the drop.

Because of that, the Saints start as favourites with BetVictor. You can get 3/5 (1.6) for them to win, while Villa are a big 9/2 (5.5). From a betting angle, the Saints are the stronger heading into this, but the 3/5 (1.6) is too short to back. A draw at 10/3 (4.33) with BetVictor may offer the most value.

Southampton vs Aston Villa Score Prediction

Ings terrific form has put him in contention for a place in the England squad for Euro 2020. He has been involved in 20 goals this season and is looking sharp. He can get behind defences and with Villa’s poor record, we reckon he’ll get on the scoresheet here.

In saying that, Southampton don’t have the best defensive record themselves. The Saints have conceded 48 times and can be vulnerable to counter attacks. Jack Grealish is another player hopeful of making the Euros and on current form its hard to disagree. He has had a hand in 13 goals (7 goals, 6 assists) this season and will cause real problems for the home side.

It should be quite an even match, more than the odds suggest. However, the Saints have been more clinical than their rivals and that’s why we’re picking them for a win.

A 2-1 win to Southampton at 15/2 (8.5) with BetVictor is our prediction.

Southampton vs Aston Villa Tip

Aston Villa really need to get something from this game with both West Ham and Watford chasing them in 17th. A win could see them up to 15th in the table and could put some daylight between them and the relegation zone. In fact, a win would bring them within three points of Southampton in 12th spot.

It will be easier said that done however as the Saints are looking to bounce back after disappointing results. They have lost two home games in a row and will be keen to put on a good performance for their fans.

We’re expecting a fascinating encounter and the result really could go either way. Bearing this in mind, from a betting point of view, betting on a match outcome is extremely difficult. What we do know is that Ings is a man on form, so we’re following that for our best bet.

Best bet: Danny Ings to score first at 2/1 (3.0) with BetVictor
