Aston Villa vs Tottenham – The Form Guide
Only one point separates Villa and the relegation zone with West Ham and Watford hot on their heels. Two wins in their last five have eased the pressure slightly, but the loss to Bournemouth last time out could come back to haunt them. The Cherries played with 10 men for most of the second half, but Villa couldn’t capitalise.
Looking up the table, the Cherries are only one point better off after losing to Sheffield United last weekend meaning the Villans could jump above them. Furthermore, 15th placed Brighton played out a 1-1 draw with Watford and a win could see Villa take their spot in the table.
Spurs have won three games in a row in all competitions. They beat Norwich and Manchester City in the league before seeing off Southampton 3-2 in their FA Cup replay. On that basis you would assume that spirits would be high, however, the manner of all of these wins has been questionable.
You could argue that Tottenham were lucky in all of those matches. Against City, they took three shots compared to their 19 but were the more clinical in front of goal. They rode their luck against Southampton too with the Saints missing several chances. Their luck will run out sometime.
What is the Team News?
Dean Smith remains without first-choice keeper Tom Heaton with Pepe Reina stepping in.
John McGinn will be nearing fitness, but won’t be back in the team for several weeks yet. Danny Drinkwater is serious doubt in midfield having strained a calf muscle and Keinan Davis is ruled out with a hamstring problem.
Record signing Wesley will miss the rest of the season with an ACL injury so the Villans have to make do without his services.
Spurs are also missing their main striker, Harry Kane. Standing in are Son Heung-Min and Lucas Moura. They have played in more advanced roles in his absence and are expected to play there again for this one.
Giovani Lo Celso has been in good form for the club but missed the last couple of games with a thigh niggle. He could be back in the fray here as could Erik Lamela and Ben Davies.
On the other hand, Moussa Sissoko will definitely miss out following a knee injury.
Aston Villa Predicted Line-up: Reina, Engels, Mings, Hause, Guilbert, Trezeguet, Douglas Luiz, Targett, El Ghazi, Samatta, Grealish
Tottenham Predicted Line-up: Lloris, Tanganga, Alderwiereld, Vertonghen, Aurier, Alli, Lo Celso, Winks, Bergwijn, Moura, Son
Aston Villa vs Tottenham Latest Odds
STS have Villa as the underdogs with odds of 16/5 (4.2) to win. Considering Spurs have won nine of the club's last ten encounters, this doesn’t come as too much of a shock. In saying that, Tottenham have been wildly inconsistent this season. They have won only 10 league games so far, half of what they had achieved at this stage season. Therefore the 5/6 (1.84) for them to win is hard to get behind.
The draw is available at 11/4 (3.75) with STS and could be the way to go,
Aston Villa vs Tottenham Score Prediction
Aston Villa are the top scorers (32) in the bottom half of the table and are capable of standing up to the big boys in the league. They often come out on top of passing and tackling stats, but let themselves down by conceding silly goals. They have the joint-worst defensive record in the league and have let in 15 more goals than this weekends rivals.
In saying that, Spur's record isn’t much better. They have the joint-worst clean sheet record (4) along with Villa and especially struggle away from home. In fact, they have conceded at least two goals in 12 of their last 20 games on the road.
Because of that, we’re expecting both teams to find the net here. Although we think that Spurs are not worth backing at 5/6 (1.84) they should be winning here. A 2-1 away win at 13/2 (7.5) with STS is our correct score pick.
Aston Villa vs Tottenham Tip
A win for Spurs would take them to within one point of Chelsea in fourth as Frank Lampard men don’t play until Monday night. If Mourinho could get Spurs to that position, you think there would be a good chance of them overtaking Chelsea eventually. If Villa lose, they remain in 17th but 18th West Ham will have a game in hand over them. It’s a game that both managers will desperately want to win.
A draw would probably suit Villa better as they’re in a position where every point counts. Mourinho will take heart from his sides fighting spirit in recent games, and it’s difficult to see Spurs lose.
Bearing in mind that both sides have been scoring and that Spurs should win, we’re going with a double chance and overs market for our best bet.
