A revitalised Watford are the visitors to Villa Park on Tuesday evening. The Hornets have the chance to open a four-point gap between them and their relegation rivals with a win, and look good to do so.
The Villans have lost three of their last four home games including a 6-1 mauling at the hands of Manchester City last time out. Without a recognised striker will the home side be able to take anything from this relegation battle? Find out our predictions here.

Aston Villa vs Watford – The Form Guide
Dean Smith must be worried heading into the business end of the season without a recognised striker. Indeed, so must the fans, especially given recent form. They have only two wins from their last 10 league games and now have the second-worst defensive record with 44 goals conceded. Only bottom of the table Norwich have conceded more.
Aston Villa managed to secure a point away to Brighton in their last league game thanks to a Jack Grealish wonder goal. That point, however, was not enough to lift them out of the drop zone with Tuesdays rivals one point ahead. Any slip-ups tonight and they could be in real trouble.
In stark contrast, Watford are full of confidence and playing well. Perhaps more importantly, are gathering points. The Hornets are on a six-game unbeaten streak, winning four in that time and keeping four clean sheets too. Previous to this streak they had won only once in the league with few expecting this dramatic turnaround.
They will be disappointed to have come away with only one point in their scoreless draw against Spurs at the weekend with captain Troy Deeney spurring a great chance from the penalty spot. Nigel Pearson won’t be too disheartened however as his side put on a solid display. A win here would put some daylight between them, and the drop zone.
What is the Team News?
There are major injury concerns for Villa. With record signing Wesley ruled out for the season, Villa are no doubt expecting to do a bit of business for a striker in this window. In the meantime, Grealish, Anwar El Ghazi, and Trezeguet will lead the line for Smith’s side.
Midfielder John McGinn remains out, while Jonathan Kodjia and keeper Tom Heaton will also miss out through injury. Pepe Reina will start in goal as stand-in keeper Jed Steer is also out with a knock.
Ismaila Sarr has been instrumental in Watford's resurgence and his fitness is a real worry for Pearson. His star picked up a knock in the draw with Spurs and will be assessed closer to kick-off.
At the back, Femenia, Daryl Janmaat, and Sebastian Prodl are all ruled out. The Hornets can’t afford any more injuries in defence.
Will Hughes, Tom Cleverley, and Danny Welbeck are all deemed serious doubts and are unlikely to feature.
Aston Villa Predicted Line-up: Reina; Konsa, Mings, Hause; Guilbert, Luiz, Nakamba, Targett; Trezeguet, El Ghazi, Grealish
Watford Predicted Line-up: Foster; Mariappa, Dawson, Cathcart, Masina; Chalobah, Capoue; Pereyra, Doucoure, Deulofeu; Deeney
Aston Villa vs Watford Latest Odds
Villa were beaten 3-0 in the reverse of this fixture less than four weeks ago and as the scoreline suggests, it was a one-sided affair. This was despite Watford going down to 10 men with 30 minutes of the game remaining. Villa were arguably in better shape for that one, so it’s easy to see why the home side start the match at odds of 19/10 (2.9) with Betfair. In saying that, even this might be a little short considering Watford’s form – it’s hard to see them beaten here so the 29/20 (2.45) for them to win could be a great bit of value.
For a draw to be played out you’ll get 5/2 (3.5) with Betfair. That result doesn’t really suit either team, however, so we think it quite unlikely.
Aston Villa vs Watford Score Prediction
Villa have shipped in 44 goals this season including 24 in their last 10 league games. They are looking rocky at the back and don’t have too much to aim for going the other way, this could be a tough watch for the home support.
Troy Deeney is well and truly back from injury and has been bullying defenders since his return. He has only four league goals this season and we expect his tally to increase a fair bit before the season is out. Aside from Deeney, other players have been contributing goals with Deulofeu, Pereyra, and Sarr all bagging four a piece too.
Villa have outscored Watford this season by nine goals (the same number Grealish has scored) so they do know how to get a goal when need be.
With this in mind, we’re backing a correct score in which both find the net, and Watford win. 2-1 Watford at 8/1 (9.0) with Betfair is our pick here.
Aston Villa vs Watford Betting Tip
We think there will be a few goals in this one. The Hornets have been getting in amongst the goals after a slow start, and were unlucky not to find the net against Spurs. Villa need a win to lift them out of the drop zone, with three points giving them a great confidence boost.
Because of this, we think both sides could attack, with the onus on Villa to do so. Watford have been clinical in front of goal of late and we can see them winning this one. It will be a close game despite Watfords superior form, so our best bet is for them to win and goals to be scored.
