Wolves vs Newcastle – The Form Guide

After a tremendous start to the season, Wolves have started limping somewhat. They haven’t registered a win in their last three games in all competitions with two losses and a draw. Nuno Espirito Santos’ team were unlucky not to beat Manchester United in the 0-0 draw in the FA Cup but now must add a replay to their busy January schedule.

Wolves sit seventh in the table, only one point behind fifth-placed Manchester United. They are also one point better off than they were at this stage last season. However, their current form doesn’t quite match that. Should they lose here, they could fall to as low as 10th in the table.

Newcastle are having a mixed season. They are currently 13th in the table with 25 points from 21 games. The middle of the table is separated by only a few points meaning they are only five points from safety, and likewise five points out of the European spots. Steve Bruce’s men have put in some decent performances given their injury list, and have been unlucky not to have collected more points.

Last time out however against League One Rochdale, the Magpies were poor. Miguel Almiron fired in his second goal for the club before Aaron Wilbraham pulled a goal back to force a replay. Bruce fielded a strong side and will be disappointed with his team's lack of clinical finishing. If they want to get the better of a stern Wolves defence, they’ll have to take their chances when they come.

Wolves Team News

Nuno tinkered with his team in the FA Cup with the likes of Vinagre and Ashley-Seal given starts. We expect him to revert to his preferred XI here.

Diogo Jota missed the FA Cup game against Manchester United altogether with a thigh injury. He is a major doubt but could make the bench.

Wily Boly is definitely not available for selection while he recovers from an ankle injury. As is Morgan Gibbs-White, as he remains sidelined with a back problem.

Wolves Predicted line-up: Rui Patricio; Dendoncker, Coady, Saiss; Doherty, Joao Moutinho, Ruben Neves, Jonny Castro; Traore, Pedro Neto; Jimenez

Newcastle Team News

Newcastle have 13 players who could be out of this one through injury.

Fabian Schar, Jonjo Shelvey, Jack Colback, and Javi Manquillo are all definitely ruled out.

Club captain Jamaal Lascelles is on the road to recovery after a lengthy lay-off which would be a huge boost for the Magpies. He is currently deemed a 50/50 shot.

Meanwhile, Andy Carroll, Miguel Almiron, Dwight Gayle, Saint-Maximin and Paul Dummett are all going to be assessed closer to kick-off. Steve Bruce may have to risk a player not being fully fit her.

Scotland international Matt Ritchie has returned after injury, giving Steve Bruce alternatives.

Newcastle Predicted line-up: Dubravka; Yedlin, Lejeune, Fernandez, Clark, Ritchie; Almiron, Hayden, S. Longstaff, Atsu; Joelinton

Wolves vs Newcastle Latest Odds

In the reverse fixture of this, the teams played out a 1-1 draw which on balance was a fair result. Newcastle started the match brightly before Wolves pounced with a second-half equaliser. Despite Wolves having a greater league position than Newcastle, they both have seven wins each. Therefore the 4/9 (1.44) at bet365 to Wolves is largely unappealing from a betting stance.

Newcastle have been given odds of 13/2 (7.5) with bet365, and if any of their players do come back to action – it could be a value bet. The Magpies have been very inconsistent however and with three league defeats in a row, is hard to get behind.

The draw at bet365 is a reasonable 7/2 (4.5) and does look to hold some value.

Wolves vs Newcastle Score Prediction

Newcastle's biggest problem this season has been scoring goals. They have scored 20 times in 21 games, meaning their average is below one a game. Wolves haven’t been prolific scorers themselves, but do boast 10 more than this weekends rivals giving them an average goal per game of 1.4.

Because of this, we’re looking at low scoring correct scores. We do also think that Wolves should win so a 1-0 correct score to the home team at bet365 is 11/2 (6.5) is our pick.

Wolves vs Newcastle Betting Tip

Wolves need to win to ensure they remain in the top half of the table. Furthermore, losing three league games in a row would be a huge blow to their confidence with a difficult fixture schedule ahead.

Likewise, a fourth defeat in a row for Newcastle would start a panic. Fans will be calling for the manager's head and the pressure would be on them for the next games. The Magpies host Chelsea next followed up with another tricky game away to Everton.

The sides are fairly balanced coming into this match, but on current form and squad depth – we have to back Wolves to win. But only just.

Best bet: Wolves to win by one goal at 13/5 (3.6) with bet365
