Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola all but conceded the title following his sides 3-2 defeat to Wolves over Christmas. He now has his sights set on second place, and with Leicester above them, he needs to string together some good results.
New Year visitors Everton, are on their best run of form of the season, unbeaten in their last five league games. They won’t make it an easy day for City, and may even cause another shock.

Manchester City vs Everton – The Form Guide
City have lost five times so far this season, one more than the entire campaign last year. Wolves completed the double over in a 3-2 win at Molineux on the 27th December, a game in which City threw away a 2-0 lead. It’s hard to imagine a City side to lose so often, but without key personal, they don’t seem to play as fluently.
Last time out, however, the light Blues bounced back with a 2-0 win over Sheffield United. Sergio Aguero scored on his return to the side, and it shows how much the Argentine is relied on. It was also the first time City kept a clean sheet at home since the end of October. Should they continue their assault on second, they need to keep it tight at the back.
Carlo Ancelotti has enjoyed a great start to his Everton career following a shock move a couple of weeks back. The Toffees look like they’re having fun when they take to field and are playing as a unit. Dominic Calvert-Lewin is thriving under his new manager, scoring three times in his first two games.
Everton beat a tough Newcastle side, away from home 2-1 on Saturday. It was Calvert-Lewin at the double in an impressive win which lifted the Merseyside club to 10th in the table. They have now won three of their last five Premier League games and will be hoping to extend their unbeaten run on Wednesday.
Manchester City Team News
Pep remains without Ederson for this one following his red card against Wolves. Claudio Bravo will likely start in goal having managed to keep a clean sheet against Sheffield.
Aguero is expected to lead the line again and an unchanged side is most probably what we will see.
In terms of injuries, City’s list is shortening. David Silva will be assessed close to kick-off while Stones, America Laporte and Leroy Sane are all ruled out.
Kevin De Bruyne has been in fine form and will be the key man for City.
Manchester City Predicted line-up: Bravo, Cancelo; Fernandinho, Otamendi, Zinchenko; Rodri; Mahrez, Gundogan, De Bruyne, Sterling; Aguero
Everton Team News
Ancelotti is also likely to stick with his starting XI for this one, although may opt for changes to make his team more defensive.
Alex Iwobi has been ruled out along with Jean-Philippe Gbamin and long-term absentee Andre Gomes.
Morgan Schneiderin could be back in contention, returning from a calf injury.
Everton Predicted line-up: Pickford; Coleman, Mina, Holgate; Sidibe, Sigurdsson, Delph, Digne; Bernard; Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin
Manchester City vs Everton Latest Odds
Understandably, Betfair have City as strong favourites at 1/4 (1.25), while Everton are a huge 10/1 (11.0) for the win. Pep’s team have more than double the number of goals than the Toffees do, and have conceded seven less. City are also on a four-game winning streak against their Northern neighbours.
Betfair have the draw priced at 11/2 (6.5).
Manchester City vs Everton Score Prediction
When these sides meet, there tends to be goals and both have been in decent scoring form of late. City last failed to score 18 games ago when they lost out to Wolves 2-0. Everton, on the other hand, have only failed to score in one of their last eight, a 0-0 draw with Arsenal.
The Toffees are starting to tighten up and the back and Pickford now has five clean sheets to his name. City, of course, will start this match with Bravo, who isn’t as reliable as Ederson (despite his red card!). Pep’s side have kept seven clean sheets, but haven’t collected two in a row in the league since mid-October.
In the last four meetings’s a 3-1 scoreline has occurred three times in City’s favour. So we’re expecting a similar scoreline for this one. Betfair has the 3-1 scoreline for the hosts at 8/1 (9.0)
Manchester City vs Everton Betting Tip
Pep needs to get his side fired up after falling out of the title race with Liverpool now a massive 14 points ahead of them with a game in hand. City have a fantastic squad but they will still have to work for a top-four finish. Aguero’s return to the team will give them more firepower going forward and we would expect them to pick up a win here.
Ancelotti has yet to taste defeat as Everton manager but we think City will be just that little bit too good for them. The Toffees have shown that they can play attractive football, and they will be far from just spectators. In fact, we fancy them to cause City problems at the back and nick a goal. In saying that, with Aguero back City should outscore them.
