Southampton beat bottom of the table Watford last weekend, to claim their first league win since August. With that win, they have lifted themselves to within two points of Everton in 17th spot.
Wednesday night’s visitors are fellow strugglers Norwich. They come into this on the back of a 2-2 draw with Arsenal and a 2-0 win over Everton. This game offers a rare opportunity for one of these teams to gain some momentum, but who will take it?

Southampton vs Norwich– The Form Guide
The Saints have mustered only three wins this season and have lost eight of their opening 14. This leaves them with only 12 points in 18th spot in the table, two from safety. Ralph Hasenhuttl has managed to lift his team after the humiliating 9-0 defeat at home to Leicester a few weeks back, and confidence is slowly creeping back. Two 2-1 defeats in the league have been followed up with a draw, and last weekends win over Watford.
Incidentally, Southampton are actually three points better off than they were at the same stage last season. They have conceded eight more than last season, but the 9-0 defeat goes someway in explaining that. Hasenhuttl's side fell behind Watford on Saturday but showed great character to come back and win. They could finally be on the right track.
Norwich started the season so well, and have claimed a few heroic results including a 3-2 victory over Manchester City. The Canaries, however, haven’t been able to show that kind of commitment in every game. Similarly to Southampton, they have three wins this campaign but have lost nine, leaving them one point worse off than Wednesday’s rivals.
Again, in a similar vein to the Saints – Norwich have picked up four points in their last two games. In fact, the Canaries were extremely unlucky not to make it two wins on the bounce with a controversial 2-2 draw with Arsenal. They will be going into this game, expecting to leave with at least a point.
What is the Team News?
Scotland midfielder Stuart Armstrong is still suffering from a hamstring injury. He is not expected to be match fit for another two weeks, which is a blow for the Saints.
He is the only player out with an injury so Hasenhuttl has the pick of the rest of his squad.
Alexander Tettey missed out against Arsenal for the Canaries citing ‘family reasons’. He is therefore expected back for Norwich, and indeed the starting 11.
Grant Hanley is yet to return to training so is ruled out. While Josip Drmic is also out of training. His return date looks likely to be the new year.
Timm Klose is, of course, another missing for Norwich. The Swiss international is expected to be out for the remainder of the season.
Southampton Predicted line-up: McCarthy; Valery, Stephens, Bednarek, Bertrand; Djenepo, Ward-Prowse, Hojbjerg, Redmond; Ings, Long
Norwich Predicted line-up: Krul; Aarons, Zimmermann, Godfrey, Byram; Tettey, Trybull; Cantwell, Buendia, Hernandez; Pukki
Southampton vs Norwich Latest Odds
Interestingly, the bookies see this as a relatively straight forward home win. Betway have Southampton priced at 31/40 (1.77), with visitors Norwich at 16/5 (4.2). Although the Canaries didn’t win on Sunday, they played well and deserved more than a point for their efforts.
The draw at Betway is available for 3/1 (4.0) and could be where the value is.
Southampton vs Norwich Score Prediction
We think the odds are pretty big for Norwich here. And vice versa, short on Southampton. The Saints and Norwich have both drawn 2-2 with Arsenal in one of their last two games, and both recorded wins in the other. Those wins have come against teams in the bottom four, Everton and Watford.
Therefore, Southampton and Norwich are fairly evenly matched for this tie. Southampton have the worst defensive record in the league, and Norwich the second worst, so we’re predicting goals.
A correct score of Norwich to win 2-1 has been boosted from 11/1 (12.0) to 14/1 (15.0) with Betway and is our pick here.
Southampton vs Norwich Betting Tip
We’re going against the grain for this game. There is a good bit of value in Norwich at 16/5 (4.2) as we can see them getting a result here. Although they've only picked up one win on the road this season, we can see them doubling that at St. Mary's.
Southampton and Norwich have two clean sheets apiece, and both have scored 15 goals. They are closely matched, but given the last five performances, we think Norwich just have the slight edge.
For shorter odds to fill an acca, we’d be looking at the double chance market on Norwich or draw, which is available at EVS (2.0).
For our best bet though, we’re going with Norwich to win and both teams to score at 11/2 (6.5).
