Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur Premier League Preview, Betting Tips, Team News & Predictions – 04/12/19

Although there is a Merseyside derby falling in the same game week, Man United v Spurs is the stand-out tie. Jose Mourinho shocked the world of football when he took over at Spurs and in only his fourth game in charge, makes a return to Old Trafford.

United haven’t fared well since the Portuguese’s departure. Mourinho’s replacement, Ole Gunnar Solskjær has only picked up 18 points from the opening 14 games. The Red Devils can, however, leapfrog their former manager's new team with a win. Will it be a Theatre of Dreams or nightmares on Mourinho’s return? Check out our predictions here.

Manchester United vs Tottenham– The Form Guide

It’s not looking great for United fans at the moment. They have drawn their last two Premier League games against two newly promoted teams. A 3-3 draw at Sheffield United and then a 2-2 draw at home to Aston Villa. United have made their worst start to a season in the Premier League era, and it looks like it will be a long time before they are competing for titles.

Previous to those draws, Man U had won two of the previous three seeing off Brighton and Norwich. They won both these by 3-1 scorelines and have bagged 21 goals this season so it's not all doom and gloom. In saying that, it’s their record at the back that is more alarming. Since February, they have managed to keep only two clean sheets in 25 games and conceded 36 times.

Spurs, on the other hand, are going in the right direction. With results going against him, at the start of season, Mauricio Pochettino was replaced by Mourinho. And so far, the appointment looks a good one. The lily whites hadn’t won on the road all season with their first one coming in Mourinho’s first game in charge away to West Ham. In fact, Mourinho has gone on to claim three wins from three, scoring 10 in that time.

Similarly to united, however, Spurs defence has been leaking goals. Although Mourinho’s side have won three games, they have let in two goals in each of those games. Spurs have the joint-worst record for goals conceded in the top ten of the table. On top of that, they have the worst record in the league for clean sheets this season, only stopping Crystal Palace back in September.

Mourinho will be confident going to his old home but must be cautious.

What is the Team News?

Solskjær is missing a few players at the back with Eric Baily, Fonsu-Mensah, Marcos Rojo and Diogo Dalot all out with injury problems.

Nemanja Matic was thought to have recovered from an injury he picked up on international duty but hasn’t yet done so. He is unlikely to feature.

Paul Pogba is expected to return to the team in the next few weeks, with this game coming a little too early for him.

Midfield maestro Scott McTominay has also been ruled out until 7th December. Leaving united short in the middle.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been a key player for united so far. He is, however, one booking away from a suspension that would rule him out of the upcoming Manchester derby.

Dele Alli has been on fire since Mourinho took over, and scored two at the weekend. He is bound to be in the starting 11.

Hugo Lloris remains out following surgery on his elbow, and Ben Davies is another absentee with a return date not yet known.

Erik Lamela and Michel Vorm are on the mend but are not deemed fit enough to play.

Predicted Line-Ups

Manchester United Predicted line-up: De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Tuanzebe, Maguire, Williams, Fred, Pereira, James, Lingard, Rashford, Martial

Tottenham Predicted line-up: Gazzaniga; Aurier, Alderweireld, Sanchez, Rose; Eriksen, Winks, Alli; Lucas, Son; Kane

Manchester United vs Tottenham Latest Odds

Make no mistake, both these teams are underperforming. Spurs are riding on the wave of a having new manager but we expect the bubble will burst soon. The Londoners have been lucky in Mourinho's three games, with West Ham in particular unlucky not to take a point from them. The weaknesses they had early in the season are still there and could be exposed.

Manchester United are struggling but have beaten Chelsea this season. They are also the only team to have taken points from runaway league leader Liverpool, so turn up for the big occasions.

Although form is on Spurs side at the moment – it’s hard to call a winner. The odds also indicate this with the away side edging the betting at 8/5 (2.6) with LeoVegas. Manchester United are priced at 17/2 (2.7) to claim all three points, while the draw is a decent 5/2 (3.5).

Manchester United vs Tottenham Score Prediction

We’re expecting both teams to score in this game, which hopefully means it will be an exciting game. There will be a tense atmosphere and who knows what kind of reception Mourinho will receive. An untidy start to the game could see early chances.

With Spurs leaky defence, and United's poor form, we’re sitting on the fence and going for a draw. We like the look of a 2-2 draw at 21/2 (11.5) with LeoVegas.

Manchester United vs Tottenham Betting Tip

Spurs have won back-to-back league games for the first time since April, but we expect that run to end there. Mourinho, the newly dubbed ‘humble one’ knows exactly the challenges he faces, but also how to exploit his former players.

Solskjær is desperate for points and on a personal level will want to get the better of his predecessor.

Dele Alli is on ridiculous form, and in betting, going with form is usually the way to go. He is 3/1 (4.0) to score anytime, which looks really appealing. We’re going to go for a bigger tip than that though.

The stage is set for a draw here, so we’re combining Alli to score with a draw.

Best bet: Dele Alli to score anytime and a draw at 13/1 (14.0) with LeoVegas
