Newcastle vs Manchester City – The Form Guide
Newcastle are on a decent run of form despite being beaten 2-0 by Aston Villa on Monday. They fell to two goals in four first-half minutes, one a sublime free-kick from Conor Hourihane. The Magpies put up a good fight and had more than a few chances themselves. Miguel Almiron was denied by Tom Heaton on a few occasions. This means the Portuguese playmaker has now attempted to score 41 times this season, without managing to score.
Aside from the Villa game, Newcastle are getting better. Before this match, they had won two in a row. They were both hard-fought games in which they saw off Bournemouth 2-1 at home, and beat West Ham 3-2 in a thrilling match in London.
Manchester City are starting to look more like the league champions of last year. Kevin De Bruyne has been ticking away in midfield and Raheem Sterling is enjoying some good goalscoring form. In saying that, their 1-1 draw at home to Shakhtar Donestk wasn’t the most exciting encounter. City were only able to score once without the injured Sergio Aguero and made mistakes at the back. The most notable was when the usually reliable Ederson ran out of his box unnecessarily putting his goal under threat.
Pep will likely have the lions share of the game on Saturday and will be hoping his side are more clinical in front of goal. Despite beating Chelsea 2-1 last week, they had plenty of chances to put the game beyond doubt and didn’t do so. Which is a worry for City fans.
What is the Team News?
Steve Bruce remains without his captain, Jamaal Lascelles at the back. The defender left St James Park on crutches following a 2-1 win over Bournemouth two weeks ago. He is expected to be back just before the new year.
Fellow defender Florian Lejeune also remains out of the side for this one, but could be back in action very soon for the Magpies.
Matt Ritchie is ruled out for the foreseeable future after sustaining a foot injury.
The biggest blow for Guardiola is the injury Aguero picked up in his teams' 2-1 win over Chelsea. Guardiola announced he will miss out on key fixtures including the Manchester derby but should be back around the 15th of December.
Ukrainian international Oleksandr Zinchenko remains out struggling with a knee injury but should be fit again in a couple of weeks. In a similar vein, Aymeric Laporte will miss out but as a long-term absentee.
Leroy Sane is working back to fitness, again after suffering an injury to his knee and as a result, won’t be back in the squad until late January.
Newcastle Predicted line-up: Dubravka; Yedlin Fernandez, Clark, Dummett, Willems, Almiron, Hayden, Shelvey, Saint-Maximin, Joelinton
Manchester City Predicted line-up: Ederson; Walker. Stones, Fernandinho, Mendy; David Silva, Rodri, De Bruyne; Mahrez, Sterling, Jesus
Newcastle vs Manchester City Latest Odds
The home side start at a big 12/1 (13.0) to get the win with Betway. Considering the Magpies are 13 points behind City after 13 games, these odds seem justified. The draw is available at 13/2 (7.5) if you think that Steve Bruce’s side can hold out for a point. Betway have the away team priced at 2/11 (1.18) which is about the shortest odds you’ll see all season.
Newcastle vs Manchester City Score Prediction
Correct score markets could be interesting for this game in that it could be anything! If Manchester City bring their shooting boots, then it might be a tough day at the office for Steve Bruce, however, City haven’t been in clinical form. Without Aguero, they lack that killer touch upfront and could struggle to break down a tough Newcastle defence.
The Magpies will sorely miss the services of their captain, however, and will likely focus too much on defending. Therefore think that City will win. We’re going to go with a 3-0 scoreline at 6/1 with Betway.
Newcastle vs Manchester City Betting Tip
It should be noted that last season, Newcastle, in fact, won this game 2-1. It was one of the shocks of the season, but it is a funny old game. The Magpies have only been beaten once at home this term which was a 1-0 loss to Arsenal back at the start of the season.
This should be a comfortable win for Man City, but they’ve not been making life easy for themselves lately and Newcastle will put up a fight. Although we see it as a test for City, it’s one they should pass.
With Aguero out, City will be looking to their midfield to chip in with goals alongside Gabriel Jesus. Because of his excellent form so far with seven goals – we think Sterling will get on the scoresheet.
With this in mind, we’re tipping Sterling to score two or more goals at 5/1 (6.0) with Betway.
Best bet: Raheem Sterling to score two or more at 5/1 (6.0) with Betway
