Ballon d’Or 2019 Odds: Van Dijk red-hot favourite ahead of Messi and Ronaldo

Liverpool Virgil van Dijk is 1/4 (1.25) favourite to win the 2019 Ballon d’Or with William Hill. The 28-year-old was the world’s most expensive defender when he moved to Liverpool from Southampton for £75 million.

Since then, there has been little doubt that van Dijk was money well spent by Jurgen Klopp.

A stellar year for Van Dijk

2019 has seen Van Dijk collect numerous individual and team prizes. He was named Man of the Match as Liverpool won the Champions League, beating Tottenham 1-0 in Madrid. With no attacking player shining in the game, the spotlight fell on the defensive lines.

Having finished just a point behind Manchester City in the Premier League, there was further praise domestically. The 28-year-old was crowned PFA Player of the Year having helped the Reds to 21 clean sheets and the best defensive record in the top-flight.

Netherlands went on to finish runners up in the Uefa Nations League, losing out to Portugal in the final. Although the Dutch failed to secure their place at the Euro 2020 finals next summer, Van Dijk’s overall achievements stand him in great stead for the Ballon d’Or crown.

The centre-back won Uefa’s Player of the Year award as the new campaign got underway. Liverpool’s perfect start to the Premier League season only enhances his credentials for this prize.

Who are the other 2019 Ballon d’Or contenders?

In truth, the bookmakers believe the 2019 Ballon d’Or is Van Dijk’s to lose at 1/4 (1.25). That price implies around an 80% chance that the Liverpool defender wins. Here are some of the other players who could be in contention.

Lionel Messi – 9/4 (3.25) with William Hill

Lionel Messi

The Barcelona frontman scored 36 times en route to the Catalan giants winning La Liga for a fourth time in five seasons. With no Champions League glory and Argentina disappointing in the Copa America once more, Messi could be set to just miss out on the award he has won five times in his glittering career.

Cristiano Ronaldo – 16/1 (17.0) with William Hill

Portugal won the Nations League which helps Ronaldo's case. The 34-year-old would likely have needed another Champions League victory to be in serious contention for a sixth Ballon d’Or win.

International success combined with a Serie A title could be enough to see Ronaldo inside the top three. However, it’s undoubtedly a drop off compared to his stunning achievements en route to winning the award previously.

Messi and Ronaldo have dominated the Ballon d’Or for over a decade. Prior to Luka Modric claiming the 2018 award, the two forwards won the previous 10 awards. On each occasion whichever player didn’t win the prize came second in the voting with the exception of Andres Iniesta finishing as runner up in 2010.

Selected other contenders

Sadio Mane – 25/1

Mohamed Salah – 28/1

Kylian Mbappe – 40/1

Eden Hazard – 50/1

When is the 2019 Ballon d’Or ceremony?
