Those who boldly claim that the Premier League is the best in the world may have to review their opinions. It was a miserable night for Chelsea at the Nou Camp as they slumped to a 3-0 defeat. On Tuesday Man Utd limped out of the Champions League with a 2-1 home defeat to Sevilla sealing their fate.
So, it is 2-0 to Spain in the knockout stages of the Champions League. Spurs superb win vs Real Madrid seems like a distant memory and some pundits are wondering how this happened. In the case of Chelsea, it is pretty straightforward. They simply weren't good enough.
Chelsea Humbled At Nou Camp
Chelsea were far from disgraced in the first leg of this tie at Stamford Bridge. However, it was a different story at the Nou Camp. It is not often that you can say a match is effectively over after three minutes, but when Messi scored that was the case.
20 minutes later Barca went 2-0 in front thanks to Dembele, with Messi adding a 3rd in the 2nd half. The fat lady sang early in this one, and Chelsea may well end up playing in the Europa League next season. Chances are, Antonio Conte won't be in charge.
Conte Proud Of Players
The under fire Chelsea boss claimed his side didn't get the rub of the green against Barcelona. Maybe one or two decisions went against them, but in reality the result was never in doubt. However, in his post match interview Conte revealed he was proud of the performance.
He said: “We didn't deserve to lose 3-0,” said Conte. “We were a bit unlucky. I think we created many chances but we didn't take them. I must be very proud about my players. They gave everything and we have to continue in this way, with this will to fight and desire to fight together.” They may not be fighting together for too much longer.
