As he nears a return from injury, it will please Jordan Henderson to hear that he is still Jurgen Klopp's first choice for captain. Liverpool have already had no less than six different skippers this season. Henderson is the official captain, while James Milner is vice captain, but both men have spent time on the sidelines.
Mignolet, Lovren and the now departed Coutinho have all worn the armband at one point. Last weekend Emre Can led Liverpool to defeat in Swansea, completing the sextet of skippers. Henderson doesn't have to worry about losing the captaincy though. He is still the top man for Jurgen Klopp.
Klopp Satisfied With Skipper
Speaking to the media ahead of Liverpool's FA Cup clash with West Brom, Jurgen Klopp revealed his thoughts on the Liverpool captaincy. He argued: “You only make too much of who wears it on the pitch.”
“Jordan Henderson is our captain and is a perfect captain for us. If he’s not on the pitch, James Milner is our vice captain. If he’s not there then someone else has to wear it. They can’t wear the armband in the stands or on the bench!”
Klopp continued: “In this club it’s maybe a little bit different because Stevie was captain for, it feels like 25 years or so. So it’s normal that you talk about ‘who can fill this role.' But I think we did well in the last few years. I’m really happy with Jordan’s captaincy.”
Will Reds Be Up For The FA Cup
Liverpool face West Brom in the 4th round of the FA Cup on Saturday evening. Jurgen Klopp has yet to deliver a trophy at Anfield, and this competition could be his best chance of doing just that.
However, Liverpool are involved in a real scrap for a top 4 finish in the Premier League. They are also still in the running for the Champions League. It will be interesting to see what sort of a team Klopp names on Saturday. It will reveal a lot about Liverpool's priorities for the rest of this season.
