Andy Carroll is due to have surgery on a fractured foot and he looks set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines. Chelsea will look elsewhere for a target man now, and former Citizen Edin Dzeko is on their radar. The Bosnian striker could be on the move from Rome to London, along with his team mate Emerson Palmieri.
Allegedly, Roma are looking for a total of £50 million for the two players. Dzeko is a proven Premier League goalscorer, while Palmieri is a Brazilian left back with lots of potential. Chelsea need cover for Morata up top, and Dzeko could be just what the doctor ordered.
Chelsea Looking To Strengthen
Antonio Conte has already added one player to his squad in January, £16.9 million midfielder Ross Barkley. However, Chelsea have a glaring weakness up top that needs addressing, and Dzeko could be the perfect fit. The 31 year old has bags of experience, and he has won the EPL twice before with Man City, scoring 50 goals.
Marcos Alonso has had a superb season on the left for Chelsea, but it makes sense to sign some cover. If the Spaniard picks up an injury Chelsea are light on options, especially with Kenedy heading to Newcastle on loan. Emerson Palmieri has impressed for Roma in the last couple of seasons, and at 23 years old his best years should be ahead of him.
Conte Unsure On Progress Of Deal
Speaking to the media in the build up to Chelsea's Carabao Cup semi final, Conte confirmed that Kenedy was going on loan. He said: “This is a good opportunity for him. He must be ready to fight to play in Newcastle.”
On the potential Dzeko/Palmieri double deal, Conte remained coy. When asked if there had been any progress, he replied: “I don’t know. If there is news, the club will inform you.” He will be hoping the deal does go through, because Chelsea need to strengthen to ensure they remain competitive on all fronts for the rest of the season.
