Alexis Sanchez' proposed move looked like being the big transfer story this January. However, The Gunners are said to be lining up a high profile replacement for the Chilean, if the rumours are to be believed. Borussia Dortmund hitman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is Arsenal's target, with The Gunners said to have bid £50 million.
The Gabonese striker is allegedly very interested in the move, and reports emerged earlier that he handed in a transfer request. Alexandre Lacazette has failed to deliver the goods so far this season, and if Aubameyang arrives his place could be under threat.
Wham! Bam! Aubameyang!
So how good is Aubameyang and what will he bring to the table at The Emirates? Well, he has fired in goals at a relentless rate since joining Dortmund from Saint Etienne in 2013. He scored 21 Bundesliga goals in his first season in Germany, and his career total is 319 goals from 425 appearances. He has scored 13 in 15 so far this season, and he is undoubtedly a deadly marksman.
Aubameyang is 29 years old now, so he is not getting any younger. £50 million is a big fee for a player that old, but Arsenal need goals if they are to finish in the top 4 this season. Aubameyang has had disciplinary issues in the past, and he was suspended by his own club for their weekend fixture. Wenger is a good man manager though, and he could be the calming influence that Aubameyang needs.
Not A Direct Sanchez Replacement
While Aubameyang will undoubtedly bring goals to the table, he is not a like for like replacement for Sanchez. Yes, he can play out wide if needed, but he is an out and out attacker. He won't have the same defensive discipline as Sanchez, who had no issues tracking back when needed.
Wenger is also looking at Bordeaux's Brazilian winger Malcom. He is a hugely promising 20 year old with bags of pace and plenty of tricks in his locker. Arsenal are hot favourites to land Malcom's signature, with the fee rumoured to be in the region of £44 million. If both he and Aubameyang arrive, it would soften the blow of losing Sanchez considerably.
