Virgil van Dijk made his long awaited debut for Liverpool vs Everton on Friday and it was worth waiting for. The Dutch defender delighted Jurgen Klopp with a solid display capped off by him heading home the winner.
The Kop exploded after their latest hero hit the back of the net and it is fair to say Van Dijk was an instant hit. Whether he will shore up Liverpool's often leaky defence is still the question, and there was no clean sheet vs Everton. He will undoubtedly improve Liverpool's rearguard, but he may not be the final piece of the jigsaw.
Klopp Really Happy With Van Dijk
Jurgen Klopp spoke to the media after Liverpool's Merseyside Derby win and he was understandably delighted. He beamed:“It was nice that Virgil van Dijk could score in his first game, a brilliant header. I am really happy. In front of the Kop makes it even better.”
“It was not the best piece of football for 95 minutes, but a proper fight. I’m delighted with the attitude we showed again – it was a difficult game. It was not the night for brilliant football. You would love to see that but Everton defended well. They played football, a big difference to the last game between us.”
It wasn't all praise from Klopp though, and he was critical of his team's defending for Everton's equaliser. He described it as “the worst protection I ever saw in my life.”.
Klopp went on to say: “It made no sense at all. We were all in the wrong direction. But when you make mistakes in football you have to react and we did again.”
Liverpool's defending has let them down far too often in the past. They have conceded almost twice as many as Man City and the most of any of the top 5 with 25. It is an area they must improve in, and Virgil Van Dijk's arrival should help them do just that.
