Mark Hughes looked like he was back from the brink at Stoke after a win vs WBA and a draw at Huddersfield. However, a 5-0 hammering by Chelsea followed at Stamford Bridge and suddenly the pressure returned. He justified his decision to heavily rotate vs Chelsea by claiming he would win against Newcastle.
However, The Magpies played the role of party poopers and beat them 1-0 on their own patch. The knives are sure to be out for Hughes now, and some fans unfurled ‘Hughes Out' banners at the final whistle.
Hughes Storms Out
Hughes was in no mood to face the media after the Newcastle match. The first question asked was about his team selection vs Chelsea that did not impress him. He fumed:
“I made the changes because I had four defenders fit. That’s all I had, so that was the back four irrespective of what was in front. I had eight internationals I think involved in that game, I had players who needed games.”
“If we’d been closer in the second half I would’ve got guys who missed out. They would have played a part, as it was the game was gone. That was the situation.”
“I made the decision in the second half at Chelsea to say ‘we can’t win this game. I will pick these players and look after them with a view well be stronger and better equipped to play a second game in 48 hours’. And I’m going to be criticised for that? I think it’s unfair if I do.”
At this point Hughes stood up and swiftly left the press room. The pressure is starting to show on him and it looks as though the players are now feeling it too. Even a win next time against Coventry in the FA Cup might not be enough to save Sparky from the chop.
