Man Utd lost even more ground on Man City thanks to a last gasp Leicester equaliser on Saturday. Jose Mourinho's men squandered some glit edged opportunities to wrap up the game and they were punished for their profligacy late on.
Harry Maguire's last minute goal was a bitter blow and Mourinho had harsh words for his players. He thinks that childishness was the root cause of their late collapse against 10 men, and he believes that his players need to grow up.
More Misery For Mourinho
There is unlikley to be much of a festive atmosphere at the Mourinho residence this Xmas. Jose was fuming after his team's late lapse at Leicester and he had choice words for his players. Speaking after the match he said: “It is as bad as a defeat. Sometimes you take a point and you say: ‘OK’. You accept it as it was hard to get a positive result.”
“That is not the case. That is not the case. It is a game to win easily and then it is not easy to say we lost two points. For the last two minutes the players had to immediately adapt, to read the game, which they didn’t. So we had childish decisions in front of goal and bad decisions as it was not just about the goals we missed, or dribbling or hitting the post.”
Poor Decisions Costly
Mourinho went on to say: “Some players have childish decisions and time helps them to have maturity and to decide better. But some other players stay with childish decision until the end of their career. You know it depends on what is inside and the way they learn or they don’t learn.”
The thing is, there is more than just this result to blame for Utd falling so far behind City. Mourinho's tactical approach against his main rivals has been far from adventurous. Playing for a draw in these matches worked for Jose in the past, but with City winning every game Utd had to be more ambitious. They weren't, and it will be yet another season with no Premier League title for Utd.
