After Crystal Palace's late late show vs Watford Roy Hodgson had a warning for his players. Palace have struggled this season and Hodgson has pointed out that hard work is the only way forward. The Eagles looked like suffering their first defeat for 5 matches last night but Tom Cleverley's late red card proved a turning point. Palace struck late with goals from Sako and McArthur, taking a 2-1 win and moving out of the bottom three.
Plenty had written Palace off as certainties for relegation after their horrific start. They lost their opening 7 matches without scoring a goal but they are unbeaten in 6 now. Hodgson knows that plenty of hard work still lies ahead, but he is happy with recent results. Speaking to the press after the Watford win he said: “This was a huge three points. Where we are in the table, you have to work unbelievably hard for every win.”
“The moment we think our problems are over is the moment our problems will begin. While it’s wonderful to win this match, we’re still very close to the bottom of the table. We haven’t quite made up from getting zero points from the first seven games. For a good period going forward, we’re going to be in or around the relegation zone. One week we’ll be in it, the next we’ll be out of it.”
Never Lost Hope
Hodgson also revealed that he and his coaching staff always believed they could turn Palace's fortunes around. He said: “We [the coaching staff] never felt this was a hopeless case, even after we lost our first three games in charge.”
“From the moment I started working with the players I found a group willing to buy into the type of work ethic and philosophy that we, as coaches, share.” When a club is battling relegation all hands need to be on deck, and Palace fans will be delighted with the fighting spirit their team showed against The Hornets.
