For the last couple of seasons Luke Shaw has been a forgotten figure at Old Trafford. He had fallen badly out of favour under Jose Mourinho and his future at the club looked bleak. However, he was handed a chance to impress vs CSKA and he took the opportunity with both hands. He was sharp in body and mind and he gave glimpses of the player that he could still yet become.
Mourinho Impressed By Shaw
Jose Mourinho has been quick to be critical of Luke Shaw since taking over at Man Utd. However, even he couldn't deny Shaw's impressive Champions League display on Tuesday. Speaking to the media after the game Mourinho said: “Some of the guys who do not play regularly, Luke Shaw, especially offensively was very, very good, and made a great contribution to the team.”
“He was waiting for quite a long time, he has been deserving for quite a long time. It is not easy to give an opportunity to a player that does not play for many months in matches where the team really needs results. He managed to stay on for 90 minutes. I told him this is not a test, this is an opportunity to play and prove your level. Honestly I am happy with his performance.”
Shaw has often been criticised about his fitness and weight, and he cramped up after around 80 minutes vs CSKA. However, he managed to last for the full 90 minutes and that will do him the world of good. If he can get another couple of games under his belt he will be flying.
So what does the future hold for Luke Shaw? Up until Tuesday night it didn't look as though he would be at Man Utd for much longer. Ashley Young has nailed down the left back position with Daley Blind next in line. It might make sense for Shaw to head out on loan in January to get some first team football and prove that his CSKA performance was no flash in the pan.
