Welcome to our Betfair review. We'll take an in-depth look at everything from the company's history, what products it offers, how promotions work and everything you can expect as a customer.
Betfair is an online betting company operating both an exchange and sportsbook products. Formed in 2000 by Andrew Black and Edward Wray, the company changed the landscape of internet gambling forever. Betfair doesn’t have the rich history of other established names, but its product revolutionised the way the entire industry operates.
In 2012 the company expanded its operations into the more traditional sportsbook and that’s where our review will focus. You'll find a wide range of odds, dedicated mobile apps, and great promotions.
A big sign up bonus – Up to £100 in free bets for new Betfair customers
Betfair’s sportsbook new customer promotion is a high value one without requiring big stakes. That’s why we like it so much. Players from the UK and Ireland can claim up to £100 in free bets when opening an account.
Firstly, make sure you register using promo code ZBBC01. From there, place five x £10 (or more) single bets on the sportsbook at minimum odds of 1/5 (1.20). Once those bets have settled, you’ll be credited with a free £20 bet. This can be repeated up to five times when the full £100 in free bets has been claimed. This must be completed within 30 days of the account being opened.
Bettors can stake more than £10 on a single wager but it will only count once for the purposes of the offer. Bets placed on the same selection or market do not qualify. Exchange bets are excluded as are those which are voided or cashed out.
With all qualifying bets having to settle before counting towards a free bet, it’s worth avoiding long term wagers. Any selections that are due to settle 30 days after an account is opened will be outside the scope of qualification for the offer. Free bets are valid for up to 30 days though so these can be accumulated and used at a later date if desired.

Betfair Sportsbook – A bookie you can trust with your details
Betfair has had some issues in the past. The bookmaker came under fire in 2015 after flaws with the security of their system were uncovered. The company moved quickly to rectify this potential vulnerability and have since taken big strides forward in protecting its customers.
The company has since become ISO27001 certified. This is an Information Security Management standard that involves regular audits to ensure Betfair are providing a safe, secure environment for their customers. They are PCI certified too. As a merchant processing card payment, this is a process that involves rigorous external and independent auditing in relation to how they store details and deal with transactions.
256-bit encryption is now standard on most popular browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, and Opera. What’s more, Betfair won’t accept connections from any web browser that doesn’t meet the minimum required level of 128-bit encryption. This ensures that all customer details remain safe while players are accessing the websites for either sportsbook or exchange.
On a player level, Betfair now has 2-step authentication. This sends a one-time code to your registered phone number, which changes every 30 seconds. Such a measure acts as an additional confirmation any time a new device accesses your account.
Betfair are licenced and regulated by the Malta Gaming Authority. This was issued in August 2018 after the merger with Paddy Power. The bookmaker hold additional licences with the UK Gaming Commission, the Danish Gambling Authority and several other governing bodies.
Responsible gambling at Betfair
Betting should always be undertaken in a responsible way. Betfair has a range of tools available for customers who feel they need a hand in this area. A budget calculator lets players work out how much they can afford to risk without impacting on their other commitments. There’s a diary function to help track where and how much users are gambling too.
Deposit limits can be put into place to ensure players can’t top up their account beyond a set amount. This is one of the first fields on the initial sign up page too, so it’s an ideal opportunity to set the boundaries on your account before completing the process.
The Time Out feature allows players to block their account for a set period. The options are 24, 48 or 72 hours, 7 days or 30 days. If you feel you need a break, it’s important to put measures in place to limit your access to gambling sites.
A variety of payment options including in cash at Paddy Power shops
Safe in the knowledge that your transactions will be sure, Betfair offers a range of banking options for deposits and withdrawal of funds. Players in the UK can use debit cards, plus e-wallets like PayPal, Neteller, and Skrill. Bank transfers and Paysafecard are accepted in the UK too.
There’s the option of depositing into your account via a Paddy Power stop too. One of the advantages of the companies merging was that Betfair customers could use Paddy Power retail locations to deposit cash directly into their accounts. Just provide your username to a member of staff and they’ll top up your balance accordingly.
Betfair accept PayPal – instant deposits and fast withdrawals
If you're a PayPal user looking to fund your Betfair account with the e-wallet then we have great news. Not only does Betfair welcome PayPal as a payment method but their withdrawal times for the e-wallet are just 12-24 hours. Get your money in and out of your betting account faster with PayPal.
Betfair's UK Payment Methods and Withdrawal Times

|Debit Card||£5||2-5 Working Days|
|UK Standard Bank Transfer||£10||2-5 Working Days|
|Paysafecard||£5||2-5 Working Days|

New arrival at Betfair – Fast Funds
Betfair now have Fast Funds available for some customers. Bettors in the UK, Ireland and Spain with a Visa Debit or prepaid card can take advantage of this feature. It sees withdrawal times significantly reduced. Many customers using this method will see funds arrive in their bank account just seconds later. On other occasions, it can take up to two hours. If a withdrawal is unsuccessful, customers are advised this is nothing to worry about and to try again later.
A range of odds with Betfair Sportsbook
Betfair offers football bettors around 75 standard markets on a Premier League game. That’s not as many as some bookmakers, but the popular options are all there. Punters have the chance to design their own wagers.
This is done with the Same Game Multi tool, or with #OddsOnThat. Same Game Multi lets players create accumulators with multiple legs from the same game. This could involve the match result, goals, cards, corners and much more. Add or remove selections and instantly see how that affects the overall price.
#OddsOnThat requests are made on Social Media. If the trading team can offer a price on your request it’ll be added to the site. The markets offered by Betfair are mirrored by the #WhatOddsPaddy selections available with Paddy Power and vice versa. This applies to multiple sports, not just football. The companies appear to have combined this process since their merger, as opposed to separate trading teams pricing up outcomes for each brand.
There are dozens of cricket markets available on high-profile matches including Tests, One Day Internationals and Twenty20 competitions from around the world. OddsBoost selections are added to these games too. It’s well worth checking this section to see if a price you were already looking to back has been upped in price.
What is the Betfair Exchange?
Betfair’s core product remains its exchange offering. This is a peer-to-peer betting platform where users can choose which side of a bet to take. For example, you can back a football team to win a match, but you can also back against that outcome, covering the two possible other selections (loss or draw). This is called a “lay” bet. To lay something is to back against it happening by covering all the alternatives.
This replaces the need for a traditional bookmaker as users can set their own prices on an event. For a bet to be matched, there must be one person willing to back the outcome at a certain price and another willing to lay the other side, covering the other possible results. Any unmatched bets are canceled. This is because there wasn’t someone to fulfill the opposite side of the equation.
Better odds can often be found on the exchange. With no bookmaker involved, markets are much closer to 100% once the implied probability of each outcome is accounted for. As a result, commission is charged on winning selections. This is set at 5% initially. However, charges increase once a player has accumulated £250,000 of winning bets over the lifetime of their account.
Betfair Sportsbook runs in a more traditional way. The bookie sets fixed-odds prices for punters to pick from, carrying the risk and building in a margin to account for this.
Betfair – a top-rated mobile app
Betfair has developed separate apps for their Sportsbook and Exchange products. Each is available on the Apple and Google Play stores. So, regardless of which device you have, there should be an app to suit your needs. Users can place and track their selections and build bets using Same Game Multi as easily as you can on the desktop site. Live Streaming has been fully integrated showing over 100,000 events each year.
We tested the iOS version and it appears generally well-received with an average rating of 4.7 out of 5 on the app store after more than 50,000 reviews. Additional security functions such as setting a pin code or using TouchID and FaceID are great options.
Good odds, cash out and live streaming – A great in-play experience
No Betfair review would be complete without a look at the in-play experience. The bookmaker has a wide variety of odds available once events get underway, including the Same Game Multi builder that we mentioned earlier.
Cash out is available on a range of markets. Not sure which bets will be eligible? Just look for the cash out symbol next to each market name. Partial cash out is also on offer with Betfair sportsbook. A slider allows bettors to select how much of their wager they want to cash out. This way, players can leave some of their initial stake running while still securing a return. Cash out is also available on horse racing but only on win or each-way selections, not ante-post bets.
Over 100,000 events available on Betfair’s Live Streaming service each year
Betfair offers some of the best live streaming opportunities on the market. Customers with a funded or active account can bet on and watch some of the best football matches from around the world. They include Spanish La Liga, German Bundesliga 1, Italian Serie A and French Ligue 1. In order to see the action live customers must have a positive balance or have placed a wager in the last 24 hours. There is no need to bet on a specific match in order to see the action unfolding.
Live streaming doesn’t stop there. Betfair has a range of other sports available on their platforms. They include tennis, snooker and cricket. A full schedule of the events on offer is available on site. This allows bettors to follow their selections in real-time or take in premium action from across the sporting landscape. This is a fantastic opportunity for punters to see a variety of events without additional subscription services.
Live streaming is also available on horse racing and greyhound racing at Betfair. Unlike other sports though, users must place a bet of at least £0.50 in order to tune into the race. This is one of the lowest minimum bets available. As a result, Betfair is a great option for those looking to watch the latest racing action.
VIP and Loyalty Rewards at Betfair
An innovative scheme has seen Betfair team up with Rewards4Racing. The partnership means sportsbook customers can accumulate points for the R4R service each time they place a bet. Registration is free and players receive 1 point for every £1 staked. Bettors can save on tickets, upgrades and other race day packages for meetings including the Cheltenham Festival, Grand National and the Derby.
If you’re even an occasional horse racing punter, you should have your Betfair and Rewards4Racing accounts linked. You’ll accumulate points every time you place a qualifying wager with the bookmaker. What’s more, you could find yourself with a better deal on the next trip to a racecourse.
While Betfair has well-publicised VIP programs for its Poker and Casino sites, there is little available on the sports betting side.
Betfair’s customer service options
There are currently 407 pre-set answers to questions in Betfair Sportsbook’s help section. These cover a huge range of topics from verifying an account, depositing and withdrawing, sports promotions and much more.
Betfair operates a dedicated customer service Twitter account @BetfairCS where users can submit questions or queries. There is also a Facebook messenger application. Players can get answers on a range of subjects without leaving their social media page. This is a very convenient option and negates the need to have a separate Live Chat window open.
Live Chat is available for Betfair customers who have logged in. There are dedicated help pages regarding login problems though and Facebook messenger is an alternate option for those wishing to speak with someone directly.
